Let’s talk about HASHTAGS!
Trying to get your brand to stand out on an app that has over 1 billion monthly users is certainly no easy task. Whilst the app has gone through numerous changes since it launched back in2010, there is one thing that has stayed true to form. The importance of hashtags!
By implementing hashtags into your marketing strategy, you are increasing your brands discoverability. This translates to an increase in engagement, more followers and subsequently – more customers for your business!
Here are 5 IG hashtags hacks that will increase your brands online visibility.
Instagram recently brought out a new feature, which allows users to include hashtags in stories. Unlike on posts, we are only able to include 10 tags per story – so make them count!
We all have to admit that hashtags can look spammy… so we like to hide them in our stories (but trust me, they’re there!).
Two ways to hide your hashtags in stories…
1. Hide them behind another design feature – like a GIF or a bit of text
2. Make them smaller and match them to the colour of the background and let them blend in
Keep in mind that if you make the hashtags too small, Instagram wont register them.
This is another favourite trick of ours and its another great way to hide the tags from your followers. When you post them in the comment, be sure to put 3 full stops with line breaks between them. This way they will only show up when a follower goes to comment on your content.
Follow local and relevant hashtags to see what others in your industry are doing. It will also give you a chance to keep an eye on your competitors.
Go through and interact with others who share content using that hashtag. Users are more likely to go back and follow/interact with your account, if they have an existing interest in the industry.
TIP: Have a look at the hashtags that your competitors or influential people in the industry use, and implement some of them into your content too. This way you are able to reach their audience as well.
This is a great way to encourage user generate content. By creating a brand specific hashtag, you can go through and see the posts that your followers have shared. It’s a great idea to share these images to your story – that way you are creating a sense of community, and it will encourage more people to share their content too. Make sure the tag is specific enough that you wont have to sift through hundreds (or thousands) of other posts to find the relevant images
Unless you have millions of followers – don’t use a hashtag that has millions (or billions!!) of posts, or your content will get lost amongst the rest. The algorithm ranks posts based on their engagement, so you need to consider this when choosing your hashtags.
The tags you want to use will depend on the industry that your business operates in. If you want to increase your engagement, you will want to avoid using overexposed hashtags such as #LOVEor #STYLE. Instead, consider your niche. For example, if you are a florist – use your location and your audience (i.e #londonflorist or #londonweddingflowers).
Don’t use spammy hashtags!! The algorithm does NOT like spam, and it will pick up on your account if you frequently tag things like #likeforlike or #followme.
1. Make sure your account is on public. Your posts wont appear publicly if you page is on private.
2. You can include number in your hashtags – however spaces and special characters ($ or ! etc.) wont work.
3. You can only add hashtags to your own posts. You can’t tag other people’s photos/videos.
4. You can use up to 30 hashtags on a post and 10 on a story.
